This weekend, Bangalore will play host to a literary festival with a difference. The Times of India Literary Carnival, a three-day event that kick-starts today at Jayamahal Palace, will celebrate all forms of writing — non-fiction, the novel, short stories, poetry, romance, business and travel pieces, and writing for the movies.
The festival will see the who's who of the literati in attendance. Author Shashi Deshpande will deliver the keynote address on Day 1, and author Sudha Murty and actress-politician Ramya will be present at the inauguration.
There will also be panel discussions with Kavitha Lankesh, Madhur Bhandarkar and Avijit Ghosh about the changing language of Indian Cinema; with Radhakrishnan Pillai, Capt GR Gopinath and Mini Menon about leaders, writers and entrepreneurs;
with Jeet Thayil, Rana Dasgupta and Lavanya Sankaran about plots and subplots; and with Radha Thomas, Sadiqa Peerbhoy and Samuel Gosling about the psychology of relationships, among others.
Contemporary and classical Kannada writing will also be touched upon at the carnival, with sessions that will give the audience a chance to interact with literary heavyweights like UR Ananthamurthy, Chandrashekhar Aijoor, B Jayaprakash and MS Ashadevi.
There will also be book launches, book readings and exhibitions that will be held through the day for the duration of the carnival.
To reinforce the carnival's philosophy that writing is not just the domain of so-called serious books, each day will conclude with a variety of concerts by Prakash Sontakke, The Radha Thomas Ensemble and Thermal and a Quarter.
And in keeping with the theme of the festival, New Voices in the New Age, there will be discussions about unconventional genres, such as crime writing, graphic novels, Bollywood Noir and writing for children.
